Complete Description of the Amel 50 by the Owner
My Amel 50 has sailed through oceans, seas, and rivers, traveling across Europe, South America, and Oceania, including the Faroe Islands, Iceland, the White Sea, Brazil, Patagonia, Chile, and now the French Polynesia where I will unfortunately leave it. This sailboat has experienced a wide range of landscapes and climates, from the hottest to the coldest, and has handled them with ease.

Equipment and Features
This Amel 50 from 2020 is exceptionally well-equipped for offshore cruising, featuring a complete Garmin navigation suite — including a touchscreen plotter, sounder, radar, and AIS — it also has an Iridium GO satellite communication system and a portable solar panel system wired directly into the upgraded lithium battery bank. The electrical system has been further optimized with an 800W inverter and a Master Volt monitoring system.
Rigging and Navigation
The rigging of the Amel 50 is designed for ease of handling, with a manual Facnor self-tailing furler, a manual genoa furler, a mainsail that rolls into the mast, and three upgraded electric winches with all lines leading to the cockpit area, meaning this vessel can be controlled from the safety of its central cockpit. With a set of cushions increasing comfort at anchor and at sea, it is truly one of the safest vessels for offshore cruising.
Interior and Comfort
Below deck, the interior is finished in light oak with custom upholstery, and includes two refrigerator drawers in the galley, a heating system, a pre-installation for a washing machine, and a safe in the aft cabin. Numerous thoughtful improvements throughout — including custom stainless steel kitchen supports, additional handrails, and a dedicated compartment for a generator — make this vessel particularly well-prepared for serious cruising.
Engine and Propulsion
The engine compartment houses an inboard Volvo D3-110 HP diesel engine, coupled with a Volvo Penta HS25AE-A hydraulic gearbox for smooth and responsive power. Propulsion is further enhanced by a Varifold folding propeller, which reduces drag under sail while maintaining excellent thrust in reverse. A retractable bow thruster of 8 HP (24V) provides additional control during docking maneuvers and in tight spaces.
Awards and Design
The Amel 50 won the European Yacht of the Year award in the Luxury Cruiser category (2018). Designed for simplicity and pleasure, it combines comfort, safety, performance, and innovation, and offers an adaptable sailing experience – whether for a world tour, a cruise to the Tuamotu islands, or a weekend with family, friends, or just the two of you, the Amel 50 is the essence of smooth and serene sailing for all types of journeys.
