Owner speaks : My story with Arakis began in the blink of an eye one day in August 2006 in Port Tudy. When I saw a Grand Soleil 46.3, with its timelessly beautiful lines, entering the harbour, I jokingly said to my wife: ‘If you want to make me happy, buy me one for Christmas.’ Months passed, but the image of that boat remained etched in my memory as a constant reminder that sometimes you have to question certain decisions, such as not owning a boat when you live in Paris. In early 2007, I started looking for a Grand Soleil 46.3 (voted boat of the year in 1998 by a German specialist magazine). Several were for sale, including one in Stockholm that was particularly attractive because it offered options (oversized winches, heating, two sets of sails, etc.) that the others did not.
But Sweden is far away, and then you have to bring it back to France. Months passed again. I visited several boats whose owners were asking unreasonable prices, and finally I got in touch with the broker who had been commissioned to sell the Swedish boat. After negotiating the price and travelling to Stockholm, I purchased STORA BLA, which would become ARAKIS after it retraced its steps to satisfy the tradition of renaming boats. The delivery in May 2008 from SWEDEN to FRANCE took place in the Baltic Sea under a completely blue sky but in freezing cold weather. After crossing the Kiel Canal, sailing down the North Sea and crossing the English Channel, it became clear that Tabarly was right: beautiful boats sail fast. The Grand Soleil 46.3 is a powerful and fast boat at all speeds, except when sailing at more than 140° to the wind. Its favourite speed is reaching, where few newer boats can match it. In light winds, thanks to its significant inertia and very smooth steering,
